SPG (Simon Property Group), Glassdoor Negative Reviews on Management, Racism Bullying Yelling DYSFUNCTION

I spent ALL day Saturday (Dec 7/2024) reading SPG (Simon Property Group) Glassdoors reviews

https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Simon-Property-Group-Reviews-E2458.htm

TOXIC Upper/Middle/Lower Management -- BULLYING, Yelling, Cursing, Nepotism, practicing Racism (!!)

Cons
Bad management, favoritism, salary, poor training, lack of transparency, bullying and racism internally

Cons
The level of abuse from the EVP level is absolutely horrific. Childish, mean, bullying egotistical sorts are the only ones that can make it. The culture revolves around of cycles of verbal abuse. Intense attacks followed by a sort of honeymoon period are the only treatment you will experience. Also, if you are a woman or minority, don't waste your time. This is an old boys club of rich, white entitled men with a few token examples of women and minorities they keep around. If you get a chance to interview here, DON'T. DO. IT.

During my tenure with SPG, I saw MANY changes. Some were good and some were horrid. Simon is all about keeping its status as the largest REIT in the US. Senior leaders and execs, will step on anyone to get ahead. They have not handled COVID well. Leaving employees in limbo for months and eliminating an entire platform and leadership. It has become a “good old boy” network and it’s all about who you know or what your last name is. [ CEO David Simon is son of SPG founder Herbert Simon ]

Advice to Management

Get a clue! You have some major talent (or did) in the organization.

(General Manager):

No diversity in Senior Leadership, leaders disregard diversity and in some cases have allowed discrimination

...

 - The company would steal and sell your soul if it could do it for a profit

Keystone Mall incident: Simon Property Group (SPG), FAILED Upper Management, Abuse

Director of Marketing & Business Development:

This company is Fortune 500 in name only. it acts as a mom-and-pop shop under the guise of Fortune 500. The work environment is toxic, there is no room for improvement. Ceilings everywhere. There are people working in this company for 30 years, they won't change. And the company reacts stupidly to everything.

The GM's are toxic, no one checks on the property. My property GM hires their relatives to do some of the work and accepts favours from contractors but the company does not know this.

Denise, the RVP [ Regional Vice-President ]. Denise on the other hand bullies her GMs. She yells and screams at them. I feel for all the GMs. That woman is nasty, emotional and needs HR to address things but HR, how dare they touch an RVP

This company is terrrible.

Horrible Executive Management

Upper/executive management was unbearable

Add some diversity to the teams - especially upper management/executives are nearly all white men

Keystone Mall Security, *aggressive* Following/Harassment & call to Indianapolis PD, myself & "M"

 Myself (May/2024) & "M" (August/2024) were *aggresively* Followed/Harassed by Keystone Mall officers.

  • Harassment: Harassment is conduct involving any communications (phone call, email, voicemail, text messages, etc.), in-person stalking, or any other persistent and repeated actions meant to intimidate someone over an extended period.

Simon Property Group (SPG), Keystone Mall flagship high-end store (Saks 5th Avenue) CLOSING July/2024

The Fashion Mall at Keystone to close high-end retail store [ Saks 5th Avenue ] amid redevelopment
    -- WishTV

SPG Toxic Management -- strategy of pushing Keystone Mall as "high end" brand/look -- FAIL

The fashion mall is losing folks left and right recently. They [ Saks 5th Avenue ] held on longer than more than Castleton and Circle Center but she’s goin through it

     April 2024

Even though it's The Fashion Mall, I'm surprised Saks stayed open as long as it did. This is purely conjecture as a not-rich person, but I feel like anybody who can comfortably and regularly drop cash at Saks isn't shopping at this location.

First of all, it's always felt weird to me because the place is so big, devoid of people, and eerily quiet. Then there's that random tea shop on the top floor that's nice but kinda cold. I have a very high tolerance for neutral, ultra modern designs, and I still find it cold and uninviting. I feel like their target audience is getting what they need at a place like Cake Bake in Carmel.

^^^ posted 2 month before my incident (May 23/2024)

SPG was using Mall Security to *aggressively* Follow/Harass *perceived* undesirables

blacks, Latinos, casually dressed mall go-ers, etc

Simon Property Group (SPG), Discrimination against class of mall go-ers, extension of Upper Management Bullying/Racism

SPG owned malls (nationwide) have a DISCRIMINATION strategy targeting sectors

lower socio-economic (esp @Keystone Mall in Indianapolis), teens, Blacks/Latinos (RACISM!), etc

    using aggressive Mall Security.

^^^ BAD IDEA -- ALIENATES paying mall customers. Word travels fast..

See link below ("banning teens from mall"):

The mall near where I grew up did this a while ago.

I was over 18 at the time, but was irked by it.

My family to this day still actively avoids shopping there when possible.

We thought the ban was unfair to the teenagers. There were plenty of perfectly well behaved teenagers that got banned.

Didn't want to patronize stores that treated a subset of their customers that way.

    SchuminWeb:

As far as I'm concerned, it's a shortsighted move that's a good way to alienate your future customers. The vast majority of teens are good kids. However, if mall management makes them feel unwelcome, they're not going to come back.

When it comes to discussing why people don’t go to shopping malls anymore, I usually point to policies like this. The idea is that the malls have made their own bed, having invested so much time and effort towards making younger shoppers feel unwelcome in their facilities. And now that those younger shoppers are of prime shopping age, they’re taking their business elsewhere and leaving shopping malls behind. They like to blame online shopping for their declining fortunes, without ever considering that they may have played a significant role in driving their customers away with hostile policies such as that.

SPG wants Keystone Mall to be THE "luxury" high-end mall in Indianapolis. Abusive Mall Security has ALIENATED many customers sectors (blacks, lower socio-economic, etc):

Simon Property Group (SPG), POOR Communication in Management, Upper Management FAIL

From current SPG employee (IT Tech, 8 yrs), poor Communication in Management:

Very poor communication from the company in general and from mid-level managers. My manager never gets our team together to communicate is yearly objectives (how can I help him if I don' t know what he's on the hook for?) and to help build teamwork among his team. The only way I know what others are working on is via small talk or if we 're working on the same project.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees - or replace them if you can't. Communicate. Build teamwork.

Simon Property Group (SPG), Greed, Upper Management FAIL, Bullying/Abuse

Simon Property Group (SPG), TOXIC Mall Management Office

     Mall Management Office, FAIL:

    Cons

Managers don’t really care about their staff or tenants. GSRs [ Guest Service Representatives ] are the link between tenants and management so Tenants would complain a lot to us and management would not do much.

Simon Property Group (SPG), Upper Management FAIL, Mall Mismanagement across properties, Pt 2

Former employee (Director of Marketing, 5 yrs) with detailed criticism of Mall mis-Management across properties:

    Advice to Management

Business development (SBV) management team is a hot mess. There are so many inconsistencies between regions in how they are managed and how client deals evolve. There is zero camaraderie, little trust and terrible communication; this should be addressed from the top down.

Further, many properties around the US owned by Simon are aging buildings; upkeep is extensive and maintenance team head counts and budgets continue to drop, making it more difficult to manage repairs. (Example: intermittent mobile signals in the Mgmt office; aged WiFi backbone thru property; countless repairs needing to be made or systems needing upgraded)

Meanwhile, the company forged ahead with acquisitions domestically & internationally while their existing properties suffer. Recommend pulling back on expansion to allow more corporate funds to flow toward upgrading existing facilities.

-Corporate does not support their properties as much as I thought they would

1st hand account by current SPG employee of DISCONNECT, between Upper Management & Mall properties (local-level)

    Cons

Many of the important decisions that affect the field are made by those who do not understand and apparently don't care what happens at the local level.

    Advice to Management

Work to keep good lines of communication open with the field. Work with local properties to do what is best for individual properties whether they are mega malls or small local malls.

From a former SPG (Simon Property Group) employee, mall mismanagement *across* properties

    Advice to Management

With a company this large it's hard to get a true picture of what is happen at each property. But somehow that is exactly what needs to be looked at. Poor management on property is not uncommon according to not only myself, but also the majority of my contacts at other properties.

Simon Property Group (SPG), Upper Management FAIL, Abuse/Intimidation, employee Turnover

TOXIC, Self-Destructive M.O. (Modus Operanda) by Upper Management -- ALIENATING/Abusing their employees (Human Capital)

You are expected to work long hours and put the job ahead of family or personal pursuits. There is no work life balance. Upper management leads by intimidation tactics. Your job is always in jeopardy.

    Advice to Management

Take a moment to thank the people that make it all possible. They are all on your team, but you have lost immeasurable talent because people will only put up with it for so long before they leave.

Lengthy/DETAILED Constructive Criticism by current Simon Property Group employee -- TAKE CARE of your employees & mall customers

    (Future ideas)

Make the mall interactive through out the building. Don't leave so cold solitude looking. Bring some character to them with out it being too much. Pay fairly to the amount of work you are giving your employees. If not even your loyal workers will leave. Give trainers and trainees proper amount of time to train!!! I can not stress this enough. Especially in fast-paced, and busy work place. Potential, but Mall's and employees need to be taken care of. Company looking very greedy at this point. Upset employees and watching customers won't want to shop here anymore if your not careful... Hope you make good decisions on helping to continue to make your company better for not just your customers but for your hard working employees as well.

    Full review below

    Pros

    (Field work pov)

You get to meet a lot of different people on your team and your customers. Depending on you or your team, tough days can easily roll off your shoulders with ease with the help of each other. Treat you customer with compassion (regardless of the situation) and you can make the most heated customer your best friend. Don't be shy to say hi! People can be very kind. The better you get to know the people you work with, the easier work becomes. As long as you are given respect and time to be trained, then you can easily grow quickly in the company. You'll learn a of new skill that you can apply in the future. Also , great way to connect on the business side of life. Lot of fun events. Make a lot of good friends. Forgive me, there are probably more pros, however I seem to be having an issues balancing them out with the cons.... That however, could be due to my own relationship with my job positions, and other experiences here.

    Cons

    (Field work pov)

They expect you to do more than humanly possible. A lot of jobs positions have been discontinued through out the years in a blink of an eye. This puts a lot more stress and problems on the ones that remain. Plenty of employees have been pushed to take care of other properties and their own. Now a lot of positions require you to do "hybrid" jobs. Not the kind that you come to work or stay home, hybrid. But the kind where you're stuck doing four job positions in one. Delegated right with a respectable team and your time, it could be possible to make it through. However, I would not doubt your mental and physical health rapidly decline due to the amount of stess. Always watch the ones who gossip. Especially, if they are senior workers that are know around the company. If you're a new employee and they don't like you, you might as well quit. They will not let you get ahead for a second. No matter how good you are. They'll take away any confidence you had in yourself. It is not below them to bully you into quitting or pushing others to fire you. They will pull any excuses to do so. I mean ANY. Because they worked there for so long, the company/team will let them get away with it. Unless, you have a strong / fair higher-up and supportive team that'll stop it beforeit gets worse. It's like high school all over again, folks. When in a toxic environment, if your boss hasn't confronted you about a situation at work, and they write you up for the smallest things, leave! Most likely the are trying to fire you anyways, and they won't stop until you are gone. Oh, and they will tell your teammates of your work/personal unfortunate circumstances and then some. You'll know when you're not welcomed anymore. Even if they smile at you. Especially, if they leave their work space to go whisper something to another, and you're the only one else in the area. It could be their own personal issue. However, if you are experiencing anything from above, I wouldn't count on it. (Also, lower rank positions get pick on just as much. Doesn't matter how long they've been there.) As much as I hate to say it, depending on the location, the teams can be extremely toxic. So please be careful of your mental health. It can and will effect your physical health over time if not taken care of. Burn out is real, and some choose to ignore the signs of their employees. Just assume they already don't trust you, and get a doctor's note. Better safe that sorry. Because of everyone being so overwhelmed with their jobs already, you are not likely to get proper amount of training, and you'll need it. If, however, you have been in the same position and just need side notes than you'll probably be fine. Keep in mind, a lot of changes are happening, so you might not know the same programs. Good luck finding someone who does or has the time. I won't even discuss pay. Just keep in mind the work and time you put in. Oh and take your lunch away from work. Give yourself that mental break. You're going to need it. If you want a challenge, this is it. If you have a good team, in good health, mental "normal", multi tasker, works well under pressure, open minded to change, handle unhealthy amount of stress, confident, and ok with the possibility of your position being cut, then go right ahead. But that all depends on what you pursue, and the people you work around. Sometimes it doesn't matter how longer you work here. It could also be how far down the latter you are in the company.

    Advice to Management

Don't let new employees get crushed or scared off by senior employees. They are your future of new ideas, and are more capable of handling newer programs than the senior employees. If their is a issue report of an employee have HR, or some specialist investigate the situation. I've seen so many bullied out of jobs that had, so much potential. There are to many senior employees that even push their bosses into doing what they want. This is not all senior employees, but enough to see that it is becoming a problem. Customers, business partners, tentant, and other employees do take notice of these things. I watch business partners/customers slowly pull away due to them being uncomfortable or disapproving of the office environment. Many too afraid to speak up. It also risks the whole teams morale, and the ability of the team to work together in the future. (Also, the lower rank jobs positions get picked on just as much.) I do understand not all workers are saints, but not all senior employees are saints either... Future idea, have a program or plan for just starting out workers in your company. It could be optional. It would cover all the need to know information of their position and the company. Make it a one on one experience with an person trained to help guide them. Takes the stress of not knowing or understanding. Leaving you more happy and confident employees. The long, dull, tiny font booklets or the repetitive, little to not information, soulless videos, or the careless, busy, employer/trainer does not work at all. If you do have something like this, really push the employees to know about it. Make it engaging and professional.

    (Just a personal thought.)

I know there is so much you can do, but if you can find a way to have a team check up or something. That would help. Think realistically when it comes to combining job positions. You won't be able to fill these positions for long or short periods of time if they are unreasonable. Reach out to your worker, and even past worker to get their feedback. Mental health is just as important as physical health! Even if you dropped the ball on one traumatic event, still reach out to your employees to see of you can right some wrongs. Some may act like their ok, but they're not. Pride and fear could prevent communication. Don't get rid of all customer and employee interaction. It'll just be easier for the customers to leave with out no connection of wanting to come back. Even the newer generations needs human interaction. You're making it where there is no commitment to your mall. That is a big mistake. If you must bring in new technology, don't wait so long or give clear instructions to fix it. Makes the Mall's look trashy when the "cool new technology" doesn't work. It makes a lot of customers angry too. If you are going to replace the maps with QR codes, make it big and noticeable. Even instructions on how to scan it. People still are trying to get used to them. You can make it look nice and helpful for everyone.

TOXIC Management Office at Forum Shops (famed mall at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas strip)..!!

The Forum Shops management office is a completely toxic, hostile and micromanaged work environment created by the General Manager and the NEW Marketing Director. Both are extremely toxic individuals that feed off each other.

    Toxic

    Anonymous employee

    Pros

Really loved working with all the tenants, they were the best part of your day. Enjoyed my day to day work. Loved my coworkers, old and new. All the senior management teams in corporate were kind and respectful- loved working with a few vice presidents in particular. The vacation and sick pay were amazing but the general manager had issues with you taking vacation longer than a couple of days - yet it was okay to be gone for her almost everyday for her issues or kids games, she would complain and talk behind your back about you taking the vacation time.

    Cons

The Forum Shops management office is a completely toxic, hostile and micromanaged work environment created by the General Manager and the NEW Marketing Director. Both are extremely toxic individuals that feed off each other. The new Marketing Director does not belong in that center, she’s very overwhelmed on a daily basis, toxic to her marketing team, a severe micromanager and does not work well with others. You never know if she is having a good or bad day when you walk in. She is verbally abusive to her employees and does not know how to manage a team let alone build relationships with her tenants. The general manager belittles employees consistently and does not know how to speak or communicate with others (she also has no relationship with most of her tenants). She does not recognize hard working Individuals and plays favoritism when it comes to issues within the office. HR is well aware of numerous complaints made from staff that have been there for multiple years. You can also not move up unless you have a degree in this company no matter how well equipped you are, even when you are doing managers jobs for them.

    Advice to Management

With a toxic general manager and a marketing director who’s been there for under a year and has single handidly caused over 6 people to leave the office upon her arrival, it’s time for a new one.

I'm not even sure what advice I would give, because it is my opinion this company is long lost. Executive leadership needs to be gutted and replaced with innovative and mindful individuals. The culture is so unbelievably terrible.

    Awful Overall

    Director of marketing

    Pros

There really aren't any pros to Simon. While the benefits package is decent, it isn't anything you couldn't match or receive better at large corporations.

    Cons

This is outright one of the worst companies to work for. Here's why:

     - Learning & Development: non-existent, no onboarding, no formal training for your job role (which isn't always an issue, but when you're working for a company that is highly process oriented and you're handling sensitive data/monetary items it is absolutely necessary)

     - Morale: very negative sentiments among staff overall, many cliques , disingenuous management (because they're making sure their heads aren't being cut off also)

     - Working Conditions: mall offices are inhabitable, no windows, dingy, dark; required to work weekends/holidays (and if you're short staffed, you're expected work additional weekends/holidays)

     - Compensation: positions are severely underpaid; yes, you will receive a Direct title that might work to your benefit on your resume, but it is not worth it

    Advice to Management

I'm not even sure what advice I would give, because it is my opinion this company is long lost. Executive leadership needs to be gutted and replaced with innovative and mindful individuals. The culture is so unbelievably terrible.

Simon Property Group (SPG), FAILED Upper Management, Abuse

Simon Property Group (SPG), FAILED Upper Management:

This company is Fortune 500 in name only. it acts as a mom-and-pop shop under the guise of Fortune 500. The work environment is toxic, there is no room for improvement. Ceilings everywhere. There are people working in this company for 30 years, they won't change. And the company reacts stupidly to everything.

The GM's are toxic, no one checks on the property. My property GM hires their relatives to do some of the work and accepts favours from contractors but the company does not know this.

Denise, the RVP. Denise on the other hand bullies her GMs. She yells and screams at them. I feel for all the GMs. That woman is nasty, emotional and needs HR to address things but HR, how dare they touch an RVP

    This company is terrrible.

    Don't accept the position

Director of marketing and business development

    Pros

The only pro is that you will have a steady job, but not because they furlough to save a few dollars.

    Cons

Don't accept the job and leave the one you are in. I read the reviews and ignored them. Instead of leading the industry, they follow trends for 2 minutes. The first sign of trouble in COVID, they laid off the Development department followed by furloughing everyone from the Marketing team. Anyone making money over 120K was forced into a 10% cut but later on, they were retroactively paid back. Meanwhile, the folks including myself from the Marketing department didn't get anything. We lost our income. BTW this happened in March. Note April of 2020 or May but March.

The GM's are toxic, no one checks on the property. My property GM hires their relatives to do some of the work and accepts favours from contractors but the company does not know this. They send an audit, but GMs do the audit so.... Then HR, not helpful. HR matters are never properly addressed. There are no follow-ups. They launch an investigation but don't actually do anything.

No one cares about you, if you have great ideas, your GMs will take credit and never give you due credit. They are all about looking good to Denise, the RVP. Denise on the other hand bullies her GMs. She yells and screams at them. I feel for all the GMs. That woman is nasty, emotional and needs HR to address things but HR, how dare they touch an RVP. It becomes about we have to work as a team and how Denise is producing numbers. All Denise does is keep people on the tightest leash. There are no commissions for the team. Your prizes are to play BINGO and get a COOZIE or a Wristlet if you make a 100,000 deal. Denise really loves this game.

Let's talk about SAFETY - you were allowed to work from home for a short period (1month). Now you are not allowed. We are NOT vaccinated and the team comes to a MALL environment but like every sensible company, you are not even given the option of working from home. Marketing doe NOT need to be at the mall. I can go on and on but trust me if you are coming from a well-established company or a job, don't do it no matter how bad the situation is over there. This company is terrrible.

    Advice to Management

You need to restructure the entire company. There are too many toxic people, ceilings, no sharing of ideas and not a nurturing environment. Your company is a means to a paycheque and needs an overhaul. But I don't see it changing. Guess what you review reader - there are also NO perks to working for Simon. No appreciation, no corporate discounts, no added benefits. None of the new stuff.
